Maximum AHV Pension: How to Get the Most Out of Your Retirement Pension

What will be the maximum AHV pension in 2026?

People who work pay monthly contributions that are later paid out as a pension in old age. The amount of the pension depends on the contributions paid. The maximum AHV pension will be CHF 2,520 per month in 2026.

Who is eligible for a full pension?

To receive the CHF 2,520, these two points must be met:

  • ‍Contribute for 44 years: You must have made contributions continuously from your 21st birthday until your 65th birthday. Every year counts.
  • High salary: Your average salary must be at least CHF 90,720.

The "Married Couple Trap"

Married couples need to be especially careful. Even if both partners have always contributed the maximum amount, they will not receive twice the full pension combined.

  • The 150% limit: The combined pension for both spouses is capped at CHF 3,780 per month.
  • If your combined pension would actually be higher, it is simply reduced. This happens to nearly 88% of all married couples in Switzerland.

When is it worth getting a checkup?

You should check your account well before retirement, because gaps can end up costing you:

  • Request an AHV account statement: Request an AHV account statement every five years. This way, you can immediately see if there are any gaps in your contributions.
    ‍‍
  • Gaps in contributions: If you ever missed a payment (e.g., because you were in school or traveling the world), that counts as a missing year. This permanently reduces your pension by about 2.3%.
  • Catching up on payments: Keep an eye on the clock. You only have 5 years to make up any missed payments.
    ‍‍
  • Bonus for Parents & Caregivers: Do you have children under the age of 16? You will automatically receive child-rearing credits of CHF 45,360 per year. However, if you care for relatives who require care, you must actively apply for care credits each year.
  • Pension Estimate: Starting at age 50, it’s a good idea to request an official estimate from the AHV to help you plan with confidence.
